2024 Support for U.S. Next-Generation Policy Research Program
Program Outline
The Korea Foundation (KF) is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Support for U.S. Next-Generation Policy Research program. This initiative aims to finance innovative research endeavors in the United States, focusing on in-depth analyses and policy recommendations pertaining to various issues concerning Korea.
Eligibility
The program invites applications from researchers who meet the following criteria:
Hold a Ph.D. or M.A. obtained within the last 7 years as of May 16, 2024, the final day of the application period;
Are affiliated with a research institute, think tank, or university-based research institution in the U.S.
l Applications should be submitted under the name of the accredited institution.
l Applicant researchers will serve as the research’s project director.
Areas of Support
The program encourages policy-oriented research or research activities (seminars, workshops, etc.) related to Korea. Research findings should aim to impact public policy and hold policy implications within one of the following three domains:
1. Issues related to the Korean Peninsula: regional security, the U.S.-ROK alliance, non-proliferation, soft power, Korea-Japan relations, etc.
2. Cooperation in science and technology policy: semiconductors, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, space, etc.
3. Cooperation on global issues: economic security, supply chain, human rights and democracy, climate change and the environment, energy, changing geopolitics, etc.
Grant Coverage
The program offers grants of up to USD 70,000 per application, which can cover project expenses, researcher/staff salaries, publication fees, etc. Additionally, indirect costs of up to 10% of total direct costs may be requested.
Grant Period
The grant period spans one year.
How to Apply
Applications should be submitted via the KF Online Application System (https://apply.kf.or.kr/). Applications must be written in English, with all budget details given in USD.
Program Schedule
1. Application Period: April 1–May 16 (18:00 KST), 2024
2. Notification of Results: by June 30, 2024
Required Documents
1. Online application (via the KF Online Application System)
2. Supplementary materials (to be uploaded with the online application):
l Project proposal
l Project budget (in USD)
l CVs of project director and participants
l M.A. or Ph.D. degree certificate of the submitting researcher. If the applicant researcher has not yet obtained their M.A or Ph.D. when submitting their application, a copy of their degree certificate must be submitted before the start of the grant period.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be assessed based on the following:
1. Excellence of the research plan
2. Capability/experience of participants in terms of achievements and activities related to Korea and East Asia
3. Budget feasibility
4. Anticipated results of the proposed project and plans for dissemination of research results
Important Reminders
1. Applicant institutions should notify the KF of any changes to the information contained in the plan after submission (if relevant).
2. During the application screening process, the KF may require an applicant institution to submit additional information or adjust its project plan.
3. After notifying applicants of screening results, the KF will discuss the details of each project and its budget with the respective institution, and then conclude a grant agreement with each accepted institution.
4. The KF will remit the grant in USD.
5. Recipients are required to submit the following within the grant period: a final report, financial statement, and project outcomes. The final report and financial statement must adhere to the KF’s designated formats.
6. The project outcomes must include:
l A “policy brief” resulting from the research findings. The involvement of a policy advisor, who can provide assistance to the research from a policy perspective, is highly recommended.
l Organization of online or offline events to disseminate research results (workshop, international conference, etc.)
l Publication of research results (book, research paper, policy memo, homepage, etc.) online or offline
