COLUMBUS, Ohio —
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announced a major development on Ohio driver's licenses and IDs as it relates to electronic storage.
On Wednesday, DeWine and Husted announced that residents in the state can add their Ohio-issued driver’s license or state identification card to Apple Wallet for use in person at select businesses, in select apps, and at Transportation Security Administration security checkpoints.
That includes two nearby airports that are among the busiest in the area: John Glenn Columbus International Airport and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
“Ohio has always been a leader in innovation, and now we are the fifth state in the country that gives residents the option to securely add their driver’s license to Apple Wallet,” DeWine said. “This is another example of how Ohio is using technology to better serve its customers and residents.”
This step was a result of a collaboration between InnovateOhio and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles with Apple, to help provide a secure way for residents to add their IDs to their iPhones and Apple Watch.
State officials also announced a free age verification app for businesses, enabling them to accept customers' mobile driver's licenses and IDs through an iPhone.
To get started, businesses can download the Ohio Mobile ID Check app in the App Store and follow the steps within.
